Boonhorse - S/T

Boonhorse are a stoner rock/sludge/doom band from Canberra, Australia. Formerly of the band LOG, who I saw for the first time way back in 2003 at an awesome metal festival called Metal for the Brain, which was held in Canberra for 15 years although sadly no longer running. These guys know how to write some groovy riffs, and some songs even feature harmonica, so how can you go wrong?!

Noothgrush - Live for Nothing (2011)

Noothgrush are a sludge band, formed in 1994 who can be compared with bands such as Grief, Eyehategod and Dystopia. They have recently reformed and are playing Maryland Death Fest next year. This album contains two live radio broadcasts from the late 90s, and has been released by Southern Lord Records.

Ilsa - Tutti il Colori del Buio (2010)

Heavy sludge/death doom with touches of crust from the US. For fans of Coffins, Hooded Menace (who they just released a split with), Corrupted, etc. Highly recommended, this album kicked my arse hard when I first heard it.

Ensorcelor - Unarctica Begins

Heavy as fuck riffs - check. Evil, piercing and raspy vocals - check. Lovecraft inspired lyrics - check. Incredible sludgy goodness from Canada. This is such wonderfully crafted album, you can hear acoustic interludes that are interspersed beautifully with desperate, gut-wrenching screams that then flow into heavy, riff-oriented sludge with hints of black metal (both in asethetic and sound). The last track in particular is a stand-out, fucking epic. For fans of Cough's first album and Thou.

Absolutely deranged & heavy as shit japanese sludge in the vein of the masters Corrupted (with some black metal thrown in for good measure). Turn it up loud.

Demented and filthy satanic sludge, featuring a bunch of degenerates from bands such as Kilslug, Anal Cunt, Dinosaur Jr and Deep Wound. Sloppy, drunken hate jams.

Pre-Friday Madness

As I sit in my room, drinking some Pre-Friday goodness from Radelaide, SA, and listening to various bootlegs (keep your eyes peeled for possible posts), I feel it'd be a good idea to introduce myself by posting one of my favourite bands. Ever.

Looking Glass are an awesome band out of The Bra (Canberra, ACT, for your non-Bogans). I was fortunate enough to experience them at the 2009 Doomsday Festival, where, as pretty much the only unheralded band amongst about a dozen of Australia's best doom/sludge acts, they proceeded to near steal the show.

For fans of Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Iron Monkey, Wolfmother (yes, Wolfmother), and even Led Zepplin, these guys are great to listen to on a warm day, in your concrete backyard, with the volume turned to 11 and a Cooper's Pale (or Sparkling, for the more hardcore beer nuts) in hand.
